TCCAA announces Women’s Basketball Awards, All-Conference Teams

The Tennessee Community College Athletic Association announced their women's basketball awards and all-conference teams for the 2023-24 season.

 

Walters State's Asia Barr was named the Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year. Jackson State's Talyia Cawthon was named the Defensive Player of the Year, while Walters State's Kyra Perkins was named Freshman of the Year. Chattanooga State's Stacey Franklin was named Coach of the Year. 

 

Barr was named Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year after averaging 15.7 points per game. Barr finished fourth in the country in 3-pointers made, draining 90 treys on the season. Barr broke the Walters State school record for 3-pointers in a game twice during the season, the most recent being 13 against Roane State. Barr also averaged five assists and three rebounds per game. 

 

Cawthon earned Defensive Player of the Year honors after leading the conference and finishing second in the nation in steals with 114. Cawthon was first in the nation in steals per game, averaging 5.4. That number is over one steal per game more than anyone else in the country. Cawthon's best defensive performance came against Cleveland State, where she accounted for 10 steals. 

 

Perkins was solid all the way around for Walters State, earning Freshman of the Year honors. Perkins averaged 14.9 points per game, finishing fifth in the conference. She finished averaging 4.8 rebounds per game and was eighth in the conference in blocks with 25. Perkins also totaled 57 steals and knocked in 42 3-pointers. Her 142 field goals made were fourth-best in the conference. 

 

For Franklin, she earned Coach of the Year after her Lady Tigers finished the season at 28-1 and 17-1 in TCCAA play. The Lady Tigers finished the regular season ranked No. 25 in the country. Franklin's team averaged 77.2 points per game, grabbed 26.3 rebounds per game and had  17.7 assists per game. Their defense allowed 58.3 points per game and forced over 10 turnovers per game. 

 

Making All-TCCAA First Team were Walters State's Barr and Perkins, Chattanooga State's Silkiari Vazquez-Troche and Tamyra Carter, Columbia State's Nisea Burrell, Dyersburg State's Ava Craddock, Roane State's Addison Oliver, Jackson State's Cawthon and Bailey Lee and Cleveland State's Jordan McCullough.  

 

Making All-TCCAA Second Team were Cleveland State's Latisha Parris, Jackson State's Timia Lawson and Keria McGhee, Southwest Tennessee's Jaliya Zackery, Deziya McClendon and Cortayza Flowers, Roane State's Jayla Cobb, Walters State's Briontanay Marshall, Dyersburg State's Sydney Neale and Motlow State's Ja'Mya Gooch.
