WSWBK: Former Walters State Lady Senator Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu taken by Seattle Storm in WNBA Draft

NEW YORK CITY, NY – Shortly before the start of the 2018-19 women's basketball season at Walters State, Jasmin Coleman told Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu that she had the potential to make it to the WNBA.

If Fankam Mendjiadeu didn't believe Coleman then, she certainly does now.

On Monday evening, Fankam Mendjiadeu was taken with the 21st pick (Second Round, Ninth Pick) of the WNBA Draft by the Seattle Storm.

Fankam Mendjiadeu becomes the first Lady Senator to ever be taken in the WNBA Draft.

"I am so excited and proud of Dulcy," Coleman said. "First and foremost, Dulcy is an amazing person and a winner. I am so happy to be a part of her journey. Shortly before her first season, I told her that she had the potential to be drafted into the WNBA. At the time, I don't know if she fully understood or believed me. But after working with her in practice and getting to know her off the floor, I knew she had what it took. She developed so much in her first year. She was so humble and gave total effort the entire time on the floor.

"Dulcy is the first but will surely not be the last Walters State women's basketball player to reach such heights."

A native of Nkongsamba, Cameroon, Fankam Mendjiadeu played for the Lady Senators during the 2018-19 season. During that season, Fankam Mendjiadeu played in 34 games and averaged 15.4 points, 8.8 rebounds, 3.6 offensive rebounds, 1.6 steals and 1.6 blocks per game. She was an NJCAA DI Women's Basketball Second Team-All American, an All-TCCAA First Team member and was the Co-MVP of the TCCAA.

She helped lead the Lady Senators to a 29-5 record and to the second round of the NJCAA Women's Basketball DI Tournament.

Following her time at Walters State, Fankam Mendjiadeu played at Memphis for two seasons. In the 2019-2020 season, she averaged 12.2 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. She followed that up in the 2020-21 season by averaging 14 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. She started 48 games during her two years at Memphis.

After the 2020-21 season, Fankam Mendjiadeu transferred to South Florida where she played her final two seasons. During the 2021-22 season, she averaged 10.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Her best season was this past season, averaging 16.5 points and 12.3 rebounds per game. She had 22 points and 16 rebounds in South Florida's NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament opening round win over Marquette just last month.

She was a member of the AAC All-Conference Second Team following the 2021-2022 season and was the Co-Player of the Year in the conference and a unanimous pick for First Team All-Conference this past season.

Dulcy received her Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics this past August from USF and is pursuing her Master's in Finance.
