WESLEY SCOTT HEADS A TRIO FROM WALTERS STATE SLECTED IN MLB DRAFT

The MLB held their annual draft starting Sunday, July 17, and ending on Tuesday, July 19.  Through the 20 rounds of selections, the TCCAA saw three current Walters State Senators selected; all three of them pitchers.

Right handed pitcher Wesley Scott was the first one slected.  He was slected in the eighth round (235th pick) by the Kansas City Royals. The reigning NJCAA Pitcher of the Year and left handed pitcher Kohl Drake went in the 11th round (319th pick) to the Texas Rangers.  Both Scott and Drake were starters for the Senators.  Right handed relief pitcher Geo Rivera was then taken in the 19th round (571st pick) by the Cleveland Guardians.

Two other former Senators who had moved on to four year institutions were also slected.  Ben Joyce, from the University of Tennessee was selected in the third round (89th pick) by the Los Angeles Angels.  Zebby Matthews, from Western Carolina University, was taken in the eighth round (234th pick) by the Minnesota Twins.  Both are pitchers.

Former Columbia State and Ole Miss pitcher Brandon Johnson was also selected in the ninth round (265th pick) by the Kansas City Royals. Johnson recorded the final three outs for Ole Miss as they won this past season's NCAA College World Series.
